Overprinting of grayscale image possible?

I am trying to have a grayscale image completely overprint its background.
Is this even possible?

At the moment we don't have a method to specify overprint for entire images, only specific custom colors. Would it work to use transparency, so that the grayscale image becomes the alpha channel of a pure black image?

As far as I can see, this would be best implemented with
