I am creating a pdf from html and keep getting image artifacts in the included .png files.
SVG files seem to come through fine. What is happening here?

What kind of artifacts, and which PDF viewers are you using? PNG image data is embedded exactly as-is in the PDF file unless you use the prince-image-magic property to recompress it to JPEG, so they should look the same as you would expect unless the viewer is doing something unusual.
