I know how to create cross-references and I know how to automatically number images/tables. What I did not find out is how to create a cross-reference to a image/table that shows the automatically created number of the image/table. Eg. Something like "See Table 12" where 12 is the counter automatically placed before the image caption with ":before".

You can reference the table counter with target-counter() in generated content, although you may need to increment it on the caption element rather than ::before.
