Indeed it would. You can sort of do this with background-size, in the meantime.

+1 for this... it would be really useful when designing layouts where the exact aspect ratio of the input images is unknown, but the result must fit in a box of an exact shape.

True it can be hacked around by using background-size, but that involves modifying the HTML – a CSS-only solution would be nice.

Any chance of getting object-fit onto the roadmap...?

We will take another look at this, as there have been some changes to the CSS images spec.

Prince latest builds now support the object-fit and object-position properties.
