We are generating nice clean SVG files from CAD and we will ultimately use Prince to make PDFs of these SVG files. Some desktop applications such as Autocad allow you to create layers in the PDF and to specify that the layers palette (in Acrobat for example) is active upon opening the file.

1) Is it possible to turn grouped or namespaced information in the original SVG file into PDF layers using Prince?

2) Is it possible to initiate the layers palette when the final PDF is opened in a PDF reader that supports layers?

No, Prince doesn't support PDF layers.

Yes, it is on the roadmap. For Prince 11 we plan to support PDF transparency groups properly, and hopefully that will pave the way.
