i cannot figure out why a 300dpi graphic (both tif anf jpeg format) is showing up very large on my page but working ok when same graphic at 72 and 96 dpi seems to come out in the correct size.

is there some king of resolution setting that i need to know about. The target pdf is for print and needs to have the graphic in 300dpi or higher.

You need to specify an explicit width/height for the image, or use "prince-image-resolution: 300dpi" so that Prince can calculate the size for you.
