How does prince-bleed work?

StoneCypher
So I'm getting ready to put together the production stylesheet for something I want to put on Amazon CreateSpace. I want to make a full-bleed book.

Amazon wants you to produce a PDF which is just N inches over size. Their instructions are ... pretty vague. For example, I don't know whether I'm supposed to bleed on the interior margin.

I don't know whether to just target the book at a larger size, or whether to use prince-bleed. I don't know how it works. I don't know whether PDF has special bleed stuff (it seems likely that it does.)

When I play with marks, what happens? Do I send the PDF to Amazon with marks: crop; ? I think someone who actually knows how print works knows this stuff, but I don't, really. :D

I can work out how to get the physical sizes I want; that's no problem.

Should I use the bleed stuff for a CreateSpace book? How do I best configure the final version?

I mean, for starters, if I leave marks on default, the bleed stuff - is it still in there, and just obscured by default?

If you want it oversize, you'll need to enable crop or cross marks. The bleed and trim properties enable you to control exactly how much oversize. This information is stored in the PDF file, so that software can tell how to trim the paper. However, I don't know any specific requirements Amazon might have. Perhaps you could ask them. :)
