I would like to typeset a Bible similar to a German Bible that I have.

It is two column with verse numbers in the "outside" margins.

What I can achieve currently for left page:
outside:
1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 6 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

inside:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 6


Right page:
outside:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 6

inside:
1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 6 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx


Inside and outside refer to page left or right.
I need something that says float to
left if left column and right if right column regardless of left or right page.

Any ideas?

Makes sense, but we don't yet have a way to express this. For example, what would happen in the middle column if there were three columns?

Maybe that would be left as not allowed. Only applies to two columns.

Right off I can't think of a valid use for 3 or more columns.

I have seen center column cross-references. I was thinking that would be handled by a named flow though.

For verse numbers, I have seen inline (usually superscript) and "outer margins".
